Birth Strain and Head Shape Concerns in Babies

Paediatric Osteopathy for Babies

Birth can place significant physical stresses on a baby’s body, particularly on the head, neck and spine. Even straightforward deliveries can involve compression and twisting forces, while assisted deliveries such as forceps or ventouse, or emergency caesarean section, may place additional strain on delicate tissues.

Paediatric osteopathy uses very gentle hands-on techniques to assess and support a baby’s natural movement and balance. Treatment is always extremely light and carefully adapted for infants.

Parents sometimes seek osteopathic assessment if their baby shows signs such as:

• Flattening of the head (plagiocephaly)
• Preference for turning the head to one side
• Feeding difficulties or discomfort when feeding
• Excessive unsettledness or difficulty settling
• Stiffness or asymmetry in movement

Treatment aims to support the baby’s comfort, mobility and overall balance as they grow and develop.
